The term NMN commonly refers to the beta isomer, in which the nicotinamide group is attached to the ribose through a beta-glycosidic bond. Commercial material may be supplied as the free acid or as a salt, such as a sodium salt, which affects molecular weight and water solubility. Related compounds include nicotinamide riboside and NAD+ itself, but these are distinct molecules with different formulas and cellular handling. Laboratory research often uses the beta form because it matches the naturally occurring configuration found in biological systems.
Small amounts of NMN occur in some foods, including certain vegetables, fruits, and animal products, though the quantities are generally low and variable. Human cells also synthesize NMN internally from nicotinamide and other precursors. Research interest increased after studies examined whether raising NAD+ levels affects metabolism and aging-related pathways in animals. Evidence in humans remains limited and mixed for many outcomes, and questions about effective absorption, tissue delivery, and long-term effects are still open. Regulatory status differs by country, with some markets treating NMN as a supplement ingredient and others restricting its sale.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. The compound exists in cells as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a central redox cofactor. NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another related pyridine nucleotide, although the two compounds can converge in metabolic pathways. Its chemical formula is C11H15N2O8P, and it carries a net negative charge at physiological pH.
In the salvage pathway, NMN is generated from nicotinamide and 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate by the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase. A second route produces NMN from nicotinamide riboside through phosphorylation by nicotinamide riboside kinases. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases, often called NMNAT enzymes. This stepwise route allows cells to recycle nicotinamide and maintain NAD+ levels under changing metabolic conditions. The relative contribution of each route varies by tissue, species, and physiological state, and it remains an active area of research.

Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.
NAD+ serves as a coenzyme in redox reactions and as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular signaling. In the salvage pathway, nicotinamide is converted to NMN by the enzyme NAMPT. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by NMNAT enzymes. A separate route links nicotinamide riboside to NMN through phosphorylation. These pathways maintain NAD+ levels, which can decline with age or metabolic stress in some tissues. The relative contribution of circulating NMN to tissue NAD+ remains an active area of study.
Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a pyridine nucleotide that consists of a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. It is an intermediate in the salvage pathway for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+, synthesis. In mammalian cells, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. Nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferases then convert NMN into NAD+. The core structure and enzymatic route are well established in biochemical literature.
The biologically relevant form of NMN is generally the beta anomer, which is recognized by NMN adenylyltransferases. NMN is polar and water soluble, and it does not readily diffuse across lipid membranes without assistance. Whether intact NMN enters cells through a specific transporter remains an open question; some studies propose solute carrier family members, while other work favors extracellular dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by uptake. This transport and compartmentalization debate affects how researchers interpret oral administration studies. The distinction between intracellular synthesis and extracellular delivery is central to current discussion.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. Its structure links nicotinamide to D-ribose 5-phosphate through a glycosidic bond, placing it in the pyridine nucleotide family. The compound exists in alpha and beta anomeric forms, and the beta form is the one used in NAD+ biosynthesis. NMN is not a protein or a hormone; it is a small water-soluble molecule that occurs in living cells as a metabolic intermediate.
Natural sources of NMN include mammals, plants, and microorganisms, where it functions as an intermediate in NAD+ salvage and biosynthesis pathways. In mammals, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase. Some foods contain measurable NMN, but reported amounts vary widely by species, tissue, and analytical method. The extent to which dietary NMN contributes to cellular NAD+ pools remains an open research question.
World Health Organization guidelines state that most patients should be advised to use opioid agonists (e.g., methadone or buprenorphine) rather than opioid antagonists like naltrexone, citing evidence of superiority in reducing mortality and retaining patients in care. A 2011 review found insufficient evidence to determine the effect of naltrexone taken orally on opioid dependence. While some do well with this formulation, it must be taken daily, and a person whose cravings become overwhelming can obtain opioid intoxication simply by skipping a dose. Due to this issue, the usefulness of oral naltrexone in OUD is limited by the low retention in treatment. Naltrexone taken orally remains an ideal treatment for a small number of people with OUD, usually those with a stable social situation and motivation. With additional contingency management support, naltrexone may be effective in a broader population.
as a vasodilator in severe Raynaud's phenomenon or ischemia of a limb; in pulmonary hypertension. in primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) The production of prostacyclin is inhibited by the action of NSAIDs on cyclooxygenase enzymes COX1 and COX2. These convert arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), the immediate precursor of prostacyclin. Since thromboxane (an eicosanoid stimulator of platelet aggregation) is also downstream of COX enzymes, one might think that the effect of NSAIDs would act to balance. However, prostacyclin concentrations recover much faster than thromboxane levels, so aspirin administration initially has little to no effect but eventually prevents platelet aggregation (the effect of prostaglandins predominates as they are regenerated). This is explained by understanding the cells that produce each molecule, TXA2 and PGI2. Since PGI2 is primarily produced in a nucleated endothelial cell, the COX inhibition by NSAID can be overcome with time by increased COX gene activation and subsequent production of more COX enzymes to catalyze the formation of PGI2. In contrast, TXA2 is released primarily by anucleated platelets, which are unable to respond to NSAID COX inhibition with additional transcription of the COX gene because they lack DNA material necessary to perform such a task. This allows NSAIDs to result in PGI2 dominance that promotes circulation and retards thrombosis. In patients with pulmonary hypertension, inhaled epoprostenol reduces pulmonary pressure, and improves right ventricular stroke volume in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
== Metabolism == Chorismate is transformed into para-aminobenzoic acid by the enzymes 4-amino-4-deoxychorismate synthase and 4-amino-4-deoxychorismate lyase. Chorismate lyase is an enzyme that transforms chorismate into 4-hydroxybenzoate and pyruvate. This enzyme catalyses the first step in ubiquinone biosynthesis in Escherichia coli and other Gram-negative bacteria.

==== From the Little Union to the Great War ==== The modern Romanian state was created through the unification of the principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, accepted as a federative structure by the Great Powers following the Paris Convention of 1858, and later cemented by the simultaneous election as ruler of both states of the unionist Alexandru Ioan Cuza. After carrying out numerous reforms that laid the foundations for the modernisation of the state, he was forced in 1866 by a broad coalition of the political parties of the time, also known as the "Monstrous coalition", to abdicate and leave the country. The union was at one time in peril, but the political leaders of the era succeeded in placing on the princely throne Carol I of Romania, who accepted the Constitution and took the oath on 10 May 1866. Eleven years later, on 10 May 1877, Romania proclaimed its independence—achieved on the battlefield—and in 1881, on the same day of the year, Carol was crowned as King of Romania. In 1913, Romania entered the Second Balkan War against Bulgaria, at the end of which it obtained Southern Dobruja. In 1914, King Carol I died, and his nephew, Ferdinand I, succeeded him on the throne.
In Austria, most universities are public. The state regulates tuition fees, making costs the same for all public universities. Except for some fields of study, notably medicine, all Austrians who pass the Matura exam have the right to attend any public university. Overenrolled degree programs have introduced additional entrance exams that students must pass in the first year or before starting the degree, especially with scientific subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Private universities have existed since 1999 but are considered easier than public universities and thus hold less esteem.
During the initial outbreak in Wuhan, China, various names were used for the virus; some names used by different sources included "the coronavirus" or "Wuhan coronavirus". In January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended "2019 novel coronavirus" (2019-nCoV) as the provisional name for the virus. This was in accordance with WHO's 2015 guidance against using geographical locations, animal species, or groups of people in disease and virus names. On 11 February 2020, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses adopted the official name "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2" (SARS‑CoV‑2). To avoid confusion with the disease SARS, the WHO sometimes refers to SARS‑CoV‑2 as "the COVID-19 virus" in public health communications and the name HCoV-19 was included in some research articles. Referring to COVID-19 as the "Wuhan virus" has been described as dangerous by WHO officials, and as xenophobic by many journalists and academics.

He made great use of trace evidence such as shoe and tire impressions, as well as fingerprints, ballistics and handwriting analysis, now known as questioned document examination. Such evidence is used to test theories conceived by the police, for example, or by the investigator himself. All of the techniques advocated by Holmes later became reality, but were generally in their infancy at the time Conan Doyle was writing. In many of his reported cases, Holmes frequently complains of the way the crime scene has been contaminated by others, especially by the police, emphasising the critical importance of maintaining its integrity, a now well-known feature of crime scene examination. He used analytical chemistry for blood residue analysis as well as toxicology examination and determination for poisons. He used ballistics by measuring bullet calibres and matching them with a suspected murder weapon.
== Medical uses == Ixazomib is used in combination with lenalidomide and dexamethasone for the treatment of multiple myeloma in adults after at least one prior therapy. There are no experiences with children and youths under 18 years of age. The study relevant for approval included 722 people. In this study, ixazomib increased the median time of progression-free survival from 14.7 months (in the placebo+lenalidomide+dexamethasone study arm including 362 people) to 20.6 months (under ixazomib+lenalidomide+dexamethasone, 360 people), which was a statistically significant effect (p = 0.012). 11.7% of patients in the ixazomib group had a complete response to the treatment, versus 6.6% in the placebo group. Overall response rate (complete plus partial) was 78.3% versus 71.5%. A phase 3 study demonstrated a significant improvement in progression-free survival (PFS) with ixazomib-lenalidomide-dexamethasone (IRd) compared with placebo. High-risk cytogenetic abnormalities were defined as del(17p), t(4;14), and/or t(14;16); additionally, patients were assessed for 1q21 amplification. Of 722 randomized patients, 552 had cytogenetic results; 137 (25%) had high-risk cytogenetic abnormalities and 172 (32%) had 1q21 amplification alone. PFS was improved with IRd versus placebo in both high-risk and standard-risk cytogenetics subgroups: in high-risk patients, with median PFS of 21.4 versus 9.7 months; in standard-risk patients, with median PFS of 20.6 versus 15.6 months.
== In popular culture and other media == During Portal, the player explores areas outside of the test chambers where scrawled messages left by Rattmann and others warn of GLaDOS' deception. In particular, while GLaDOS promises that Chell will receive cake for completing the training courses, the messages alert that this reward does not exist, and that "The cake is a lie". The phrase became an Internet meme, leading to numerous cake-related jokes, as well as its adaption as a term relating to a false promise. When writing Portal 2, Wolpaw stated that they were so sick of cake jokes that they purposely avoided any reference to them, save for one subtle nod. Valve has sold several Portal-based prints, T-shirts, and other memorabilia through its own store, often riding on the popularity of certain memes that the series has created. When first released, both were sold out in under 24 hours. Valve also has partnerships with other vendors for similar merchandise. WizKids has released collectible miniatures of the turrets, cores and companion cube(s) within the game. Minecraft officially features the Portal characters Chell, Atlas, and P-Body as cosmetic skins purchasable from the Minecraft Marketplace for Minecraft Bedrock Edition. The skin pack featuring these characters was originally released as DLC for Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition. Ellen McLain voiced the AI of the Jaeger suite in the 2013 film Pacific Rim, explicitly using the GLaDOS voice in the films trailer. Atlas appears as a player-character in the downloadable content package for Runner2.

NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. In cells, it is an intermediate in NAD+ biosynthesis.
No, NMN and NAD+ are different molecules. NMN is a precursor that cells can convert into NAD+ through enzymatic steps. NAD+ is a larger dinucleotide that serves as a coenzyme in many reactions.
Nicotinamide riboside, or NR, is another NAD+ precursor but has a different structure. NR lacks the phosphate group present in NMN. Both are studied for their roles in NAD+ metabolism, yet they enter cellular pathways in different ways.
