Nicotinamide mononucleotide, usually shortened to NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide base linked to a ribose sugar that carries a phosphate group. In cells, NMN serves as an intermediate in the salvage pathway that produces nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NAD+ participates in many oxidation-reduction reactions, NMN sits near central metabolic processes. The compound is not a drug in most jurisdictions and is discussed mainly in biochemistry and nutrition research.
The term NMN commonly refers to the beta isomer, in which the nicotinamide group is attached to the ribose through a beta-glycosidic bond. Commercial material may be supplied as the free acid or as a salt, such as a sodium salt, which affects molecular weight and water solubility. Related compounds include nicotinamide riboside and NAD+ itself, but these are distinct molecules with different formulas and cellular handling. Laboratory research often uses the beta form because it matches the naturally occurring configuration found in biological systems.
Beyond its intracellular synthesis, NMN can be taken up from the extracellular environment, although the routes are still debated. Some evidence points to direct transport into cells through specific transporters, while other work suggests dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by cellular uptake. Once inside, NMN can be converted to NAD+ by NMN adenylyltransferases; the relative contribution of these routes may differ by tissue, species, and experimental conditions. Researchers continue to investigate which mechanisms dominate in intact organisms and how they affect measured NAD+ levels. Direct measurement in tissues remains technically challenging because NMN can be rapidly metabolized during sample collection.
NMN occurs in many living systems, including bacteria, yeast, plants, and mammals. Dietary sources are present in foods such as edamame, avocado, broccoli, and various meats, but amounts vary widely and are generally lower than those used in research settings. Laboratory production often relies on enzymatic synthesis or chemical phosphorylation of nicotinamide riboside, and commercial material is typically supplied as a white to off-white powder. Because NMN is hygroscopic and sensitive to heat, moisture, and pH extremes, its handling requires care to preserve identity and purity. Aqueous preparation should be done with attention to pH and temperature to limit hydrolysis.

Research on NMN has focused on aging, metabolic regulation, exercise capacity, and insulin sensitivity, but findings are preliminary. Many human trials are small, short in duration, and use different endpoints, which complicates comparison across studies. No national regulator has approved NMN as a therapeutic drug for any indication. In some countries it is sold as a supplement or research chemical, while other jurisdictions have questioned its status under food or supplement laws. Claims about extending human lifespan or reversing aging are not supported by established clinical evidence.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide found in the cells of many organisms, including bacteria, plants, and mammals. Its structure consists of a nicotinamide ring attached to a ribose-phosphate group. NMN functions as an intermediate in the NAD+ salvage pathway, a recycling route that regenerates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. A second enzyme, NMN adenylyltransferase, then converts NMN into NAD+.
Dietary sources of NMN include small amounts in certain vegetables, fruits, and other foods, although exact values vary by sample and method. Endogenous NMN concentrations are tightly regulated and often low, making measurement in blood or tissues technically demanding. After oral intake, NMN is thought to be rapidly metabolized in the intestine and liver, and intact NMN may not reach all tissues at high levels. Some rodent studies report increases in tissue NAD+ after oral NMN, while human data remain limited and sometimes rely on blood NAD+ metabolites rather than direct tissue measures.
Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.
Economic failings in the Communist system were becoming more obvious across eastern Europe during the 1980s, as for instance, the yearly per capita GDP of East Germans was barely half that of those in West Germany. Infrastructure investments were also deficient in countries like Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia, while at the same time, eastern bloc countries were losing their share of world trade. Meanwhile, countries throughout western Europe continued to prosper. By the mid-1980s, historian John W. Young observes, this contrast had become stark and rather than an integrated economic community at the technological frontier, Eastern Europe remained heavily indebted, inefficient, and unable to compete in world markets—a burden the Soviet economy itself had to help sustain through subsidized oil and raw materials. In 1985, Reagan and Gorbachev held their first of four "summit" meetings, beginning in Geneva, Switzerland. After discussing policy, facts, etc., Reagan invited Gorbachev to go with him to a small house near the beach. The two leaders spoke in that house well over their time limit, but came out with the news that they had planned two more (soon three more) summits. The second summit took place the following year, in 1986 on October 11, in Reykjavík, Iceland. The meeting was held to pursue discussions about scaling back their intermediate-range ballistic missile arsenals in Europe.
During protests against ICE operations in Portland, United States, some protesters flew the flag. The flag also saw use during the anti-Trump No Kings 2.0 protests in October 2025, e.g. in Los Angeles, Miami, and Spokane. In Mexico in November 2025, the flag was among various symbols used by a group identifying itself as "Generation Z Mexico", who is against drug violence that claims tens of thousands of Mexican lives each year and the security policies of Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum. Former Mexican president Vicente Fox wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the symbol while attending the protests. Bulgarians protesting against increases in pension and social security payments in November–December 2025 used the flag. The flag was seen during the "Flamingo Revolution" in Albania. In August 2026, the Straw Hat Pirates' Jolly Roger was spray-painted on the National Monument on Dam Square in Amsterdam, alongside the phrases "Time to wake up!" and "Stop the human trafficking".

In the early 2020s, Brazil became one of the hardest hit countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, receiving the second-highest death toll worldwide after the United States. In May 2021, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that he would run for a third term in the 2022 Brazilian general election against Bolsonaro. In October 2022, Lula was in first place in the first round, with 48.43% of the support from the electorate, and received 50.90% of the votes in the second round. On 8 January 2023, a week after Lula's inauguration, a mob of Bolsonaro's supporters attacked Brazil's federal government buildings in the capital, Brasília, after several weeks of unrest.
== Allegations and events leading up to the arrests == In the spring of 2022, Belgian security services mounted a surveillance operation against former MEP Antonio Panzeri, following a tip-off from another European intelligence service that he had been accepting bribes from Morocco. Information was passed on to the federal prosecutor's office, which opened an investigation in July 2022. According to the testimony of Francesco Giorgi, since 2019, Qatar has funneled cash to Antonio Panzeri. Panzeri, a former member of the European Parliament, and Eva Kaili, a sitting member, were trying to influence voting at the European Parliament in favour of Qatar. Bribes related to Qatar, as well as the Mauritanian government, were, according to Giorgi, channeled through a Brussels-based organization co-founded by Panzeri called Fight Impunity. Iqbal Survé, a controversial businessman from South Africa, was found to be the largest donor to Fight Impunity via his Sekunjalo Development Foundation. Survé's foundation made a donation of €250,000 to the lobbying group between July and September 2020. Belgian authorities are investigating a broader scheme, aimed at influencing decisions by the European Parliament in favour of Qatar. Panzeri's testimony contradicts that of Giorgi, who is Kaili's partner and a former parliamentary advisor to Panzeri, in certain aspects. In his leaked interview with Belgian authorities, Panzeri claimed that the first cash payments came from Morocco, prior to Qatar's involvement.
== Function == It is important in providing support for pelvic viscera (organs), e.g. the bladder, intestines, the uterus (in females), and in maintenance of continence as part of the urinary and anal sphincters. It facilitates birth by resisting the descent of the presenting part, causing the fetus to rotate forward to navigate through the pelvic girdle. It helps maintain optimal intra-abdominal pressure.
=== Carbon capture === The small, tunable pore sizes of MOFs and their high void fractions make them excellent adsorbents for the capture of CO2. MOFs could provide a more efficient alternative to traditional amine solvent-based methods in CO2 capture from various souces, including the cement industry, natural gas combustion and biogas. The flue gas or biogas would be fed through a MOF in a packed-bed reactor setup. Flue gas is generally 40 to 60 °C with a partial pressure of CO2 at 0.13 – 0.16 bar. CO2 can bind to the MOF surface through either physisorption (via Van der Waals interactions) or chemisorption (via covalent bond formation). Once the MOF is saturated, the CO2 is desorbed through either a temperature swing or a pressure swing. This process is known as regeneration. In a temperature swing regeneration, the MOF would be heated until CO2 desorbs. To achieve working capacities comparable to the amine process, the MOF must be heated to around 200 °C. In a pressure swing, the pressure would be decreased until CO2 desorbs. In this way, the adsoprtion-desoprtion process is cyclic and the MOF is used over a period of many years. A relevant MOF property for temperature-swing adsorption is their low heat capacity. Monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions, the leading capture method, have a heat capacity between 3-4 J/(g⋅K) since they are mostly water. This high heat capacity contributes to the energy penalty in the solvent regeneration step, i.e. when the adsorbed CO2 is removed from the MEA solution.
=== Rise of the independence movement === Most of the members of the former GOCA who had not died during the Ten Year's War or the Little War went into exile abroad. Instead of maintaining close connections to the new United Grand Lodge, they regularized their degrees and joined into Lodges in Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Jamaica, Haiti, and the United States. As a diaspora, they coordinated in the creation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and the Cuban Junta. These diaspora Masons also created new Lodges, like the Francisco Vicente Aguilera Lodge and the Ignacio Agramonte Lodge in Florida. Most of the leaders of the Cuban War of Independence were Freemasons, including José Martí, Antonio Maceo, and Máximo Gómez, but unlike during the Ten Years' War which had been directly instigated by GOCA Lodges and their leaders, a singular Freemasonic body was not directly responsible for the new Cuban Revolution. Instead, these Freemasons commingled with non-Masons and other average citizens to raise the funds, support, and armaments to fight against Spain. Because political parties had been legalized in Cuba, revolutionaries no longer needed any place to meet entirely in secret to discuss the concept of independence. The conversation was happening in the open, and throughout all of Cuba and the Caribbean. Since they were allowed to gather at the Party headquarters, political parties took the place within the ideological niche that GOCA once held.

NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. In cells, it is an intermediate in NAD+ biosynthesis.
No, NMN and NAD+ are different molecules. NMN is a precursor that cells can convert into NAD+ through enzymatic steps. NAD+ is a larger dinucleotide that serves as a coenzyme in many reactions.
Nicotinamide riboside, or NR, is another NAD+ precursor but has a different structure. NR lacks the phosphate group present in NMN. Both are studied for their roles in NAD+ metabolism, yet they enter cellular pathways in different ways.
